Rarely has women’s tennis been as volatile as it has in 2022.
With the exception of Iga Swiatek, who has dominated the WTA tour after her ascension to world No. 1 in early April 2022 and subsequent seven titles this year, few other women have been consistent. This is evidenced by the fact that heading into the Guadalajara Open, the final WTA 1000 of the season, an incredible 17 women have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the season ending WTA Finals.
With so much on the line over the next seven days, bookmaker William Hill has all of the odds ahead of this critical stop on the women’s tour.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: October 17th, 12:00 A.M. (EST)
Adding a spanner to the works of this tournament is the fact that world No. 1 Iga Swiatek is not playing. Looking at the odds from William Hill, it’s clear how uncertain the winner of this tournament will be—four women sit first equal in the odds at 13.00. These are incredibly long odds for an outright winner with the favourite ahead of previous WTA tournaments often being put at 2.50-4.00 to win.
The four women leading the pack at the bookmakers for the Guadalajara Open are Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Liudmila Samsonova and Jessica Pegula. Behind these, Caroline Garcia and Barbora Krejcikova sit on 15.00 while Elena Rybakina and Paula Badosa are on 17.00 before the odds begin to drop off for the rest of the field.
In women’s tennis this year, form has mattered more than ranking when it comes to the bookies’ odds. Jessica Pegula has a mix of both at the moment. The world No. 6 is the third seed with none of the women’s top three entering this tournament. She also steps on court in excellent form having made the semi-finals in San Diego last week and only losing in three sets to the eventual winner and unbeatable juggernaut Iga Swiatek. Pegula is joint favourite to win the Guadalajara Open at 13.00 and on track for a quarter-final match against sixth seed and 15.00 favourite Carolina Garcia before a potential blockbusting semi-final against co-favourite Coco Gauff.
On the other side of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka is seeded to meet Maria Sakkari in the semi-finals but will have to get past Barbora Krejcikova who is at 15.00 to win. Sakkari will likely have a third round match against beaten San Diego semi-finalist Danielle Collins.
