2023 HSBC World Sevens Series: Hong Kong Sevens | New Zealand Look to Extend Lead in Title Race

The HSBC World Sevens Series heads to Asia this weekend as Hong Kong plays host to three days of Sevens action. With only four events remaining in the season, things are heating up as series leader New Zealand looks to get another win under their belts and build an insurmountable lead heading into the remaining tournaments.

In an event known for its passionate fans, there should be plenty to cheer about this weekend as Argentina and Fiji will be desperate to stop New Zealand from winning, while Australia and South Africa will also have their own ideas. We break down all of the latest odds ahead of the Hong Kong Sevens and preview the best bets to make before day one kicks off this Friday.

bet365Looking at the outright winner odds from bet365, it’s no surprise that New Zealand is the favourite ahead of the Hong Kong Sevens. What is somewhat surprising, however, is the second favourite team—Fiji, who has yet to win an event this year in seven starts. Their odds of 4.33 trail New Zealand’s 2.87, but are both well ahead of third favourite Argentina, who sits on 6.00. Rounding out the top five favourites in the betting odds are South Africa and Australia, both with odds of 7.50.

There are plenty of convincing arguments to be made for who’s the most likely team to win the Hong Kong Sevens this weekend. New Zealand is the obvious choice given the fact that they’re leading the HSBC World Sevens Series on 120 points and have made four of the past five finals, winning two. They head into this event knowing that if they can secure another win, it will be a tough ask for any of their rivals to overhaul them by the end of the season.

Argentina, however, heads into Hong Kong having the best season of their lives. They won the most recent event in Vancouver and have made three of the past four finals, winning two. Could they pull off another win here and push New Zealand for top spot in the standings?

Fiji will be hoping that neither Argentina or New Zealand has a good tournament, and that they instead are able to return to their winning ways. The Fijians are having one of their worst seasons but have been traditionally dominant in Hong Kong, winning seven of the past nine tournaments here. Knowing that nothing less than a win is required here to keep them in the hunt for the year-end victory, could Fiji nab their first title of the season?

We say New Zealand is the best bet for an outright bet, but there’s also good betting to be had in the pool winner odds too. Backing the USA to win Pool C is a good bet considering they’ve topped their pool three times this season and are up against Australia in Pool C, who lost to Canada in the previous event.
