Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 | Can Medvedev’s Hot Streak Continue in Djokovic’s Absence?

Indian Wells ATP

This Thursday, the first Masters 1000 tournament of the year kicks off in Indian Wells—and it’s a special one. Known as the ‘fifth Grand Slam of the year’, the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells is an eleven day long, 98-man draw that is played in the desert of California. All the best players in men’s tennis will be there vying for the title—that is, except for Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

In their absence, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev will be eager to keep his 14-match winning streak alive in Indian Wells. He’ll have stiff competition from Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, both of whom will be looking to make runs to the pinnacle of the sport over the next three weeks. Add in an in-form Cam Norrie and the first Masters 1000 tournament of the year is shaping up to be a real spectacle.

ウィリアムヒルWe break down the best bets to make over the next eleven days with odds from bookmaker William Hill.

Unsurprisingly, the man on a 14-match, three tournament winning streak is the favourite with bookie William Hill to win the BNP Paribas Open next week. Daniil Medvedev is well ahead of the pack, in fact, with odds of 3.75. Behind him is Carlos Alcaraz on 7.00, closely followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas at 8.50 and Jannik Sinner at 9.00. These are the clear favourites with the next closest being Holger Rune well behind at 17.00.

With no Novak Djokovic in the picture, this feels like Daniil Medvedev’s tournament to lose. The Russian is coming into Indian Wells off the back of winning Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai—a streak that included wins over players such as Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner. At 19-2 for the season so far, Medvedev is the hottest player in tennis right now and looks like he has his eyes firmly set on reclaiming his No. 1 spot, gained this time last year.

Speaking of in-form players in men’s tennis, Cameron Norrie is another we recommend watching at Indian Wells. While Medvedev is the conservative bet and still has a healthy pay out at 3.75, Norrie is the lucrative wager with odds of 29.00 for the Brit to win in California. So far this year, Norrie has made two finals and won one title with a record of 16-3. Most recently, he went all the way in Rio defeating World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in three sets.

Add to this the fact that Norrie knows what it takes to win a Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, having done so in 2021, and the 26-year-old is an excellent bet to win the whole tournament. For a return of 29.00, Cameron Norrie is our recommended punt this week.
