PSG has been very inconsistent with their play in 2023 and it’s left Marseille sitting just five points behind them and there’s only a six-point gap with Lens. The Parisians are still the favorites to retain the title but the door has remained open for their closest challengers.
Marseille is definitely the bigger threat to PSG and they head into Saturday’s fixture in great form. Igor Tudor has guided his team to three straight victories and Marseille has racked up five wins and three draws in total since losing at home to PSG in February.
Tudor’s side has a very good attacking record and Marseille has also done well defensively, particularly on the road, keeping a clean sheet in five of their last eight away outings.
Marseille needs to shut down one of the best strikers in the league for another clean sheet on Saturday. Lois Openda has had a very successful debut campaign in France with 18 league goals. Only three players have scored more and Openda’s haul is even more impressive when you consider the fact that he’s played the part of an impact sub in a lot of games.
In 33 games, Openda has been a starter just 24 times. Seven outfield players on the team have earned more playing time than him, but the 23-year-old has been very productive in his limited minutes. Having added three assists to his goals, Openda is averaging a goal involvement every 100 minutes.
The rising Belgian star is also in red-hot form, having recorded nine goals and two assists in his past seven league appearances. Stopping him will be a major challenge for Marseille on Saturday.
Lens has more of an outside shot of winning the league title. The team has been the strongest home team in the league, winning 14 of 16 fixtures at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, and three of their next four games will be on home turf. If Franck Haise’s men can take all nine points from the remaining home games, Lens should remain in contention for the title until the very end.
