The Open Championship 2023 | Can McIlroy Break His Nine Year Drought?

The Open Championship 2023

The final major in the golf calendar is here already with The Open Championship 2023 playing out over the next four days in England. As arguably the most prestigious golf tournament in the world, 156 players will compete across 72 holes for their share of US$16,500,000.

With Scottie Scheffler an ever-present force in 2023 and Rory McIlroy coming into The Open Championship 2023 off the back of a win last week, the scene is set for a fantastic tournament. Can Scheffler convert one of his many deep runs this season into a major title? Will McIlroy finally break his major title drought? Or will we see another player come out of nowhere to hoist the Claret Jug?

ウィリアムヒルWe break down all the latest betting odds from bookmaker William Hill and outline the best bets to make on the Open Championship 2023.

For the first time in several events, Rory McIlroy leads the betting heading into a major. The Northern Irishman pays 8.00 to win in England, marginally ahead of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is at 8.50. These two are well out in front of the rest of the field with Jon Rahm sitting at third on 13.00 and Cameron Smith at 17.00 behind him. Rounding out the top five betting favourites, there’s a three-way tie for fifth with Tommy Fleetwood, Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland all paying 19.00 to win.

Top five finish odds are similar with Scheffler and McIlroy swapping places at 2.50 and 2.75 respectively. Rahm, Smith and Koepka round out the favourites, paying 3.75, 4.60 and 5.00 to finish in the top five at the Open Championship 2023.

Interestingly, we don’t see Rory McIlroy as a good bet here. The former world No. 1 may have four majors to his name, but it’s been nine years since he picked up a big title. While he played excellently to take down the Genesis Scottish Open last week, heading into a major as the betting favourite with a home crowd supporting him and the weight of a nine year drought, doesn’t seem like the best circumstances for McIlroy to succeed.

The Open Championship 2023

Our recommended bet is Scottie Scheffler. The American has had a stellar year, finishing in the top five in the last seven events he’s contested. In fact, Scheffler has only performed poorly once this season—way back at the CJ Cup in October 2022. The one thing missing from Scheffler’s season is a major title. The optimistic bet would be on Scheffler to win outright at 8.50; the conservative bet would be for the 27-year-old to record yet another top five win at 2.50.
