The battle for a qualification berth in Group E is tightly contested, with four teams inside four points. Albania leads the pack with 13 points, the Czech Republic sits second with 11 points, and Poland and Moldova follow with 10 and nine points, respectively. This is the final match of the qualifiers for Poland, meaning any other result than a victory would dash all hopes of qualification.
The Poles have had a disappointing run of results with only two wins in the past five outings, and they will be very frustrated by the fact that they managed to register just one point in two meetings against one of the group’s minnows, Moldova. The dropped points could now turn out to be very costly.
Things could also get complicated for the Czechs without a victory on Friday, but Jaroslav Silhavy’s team will have one more game to come next week, a home match versus Moldova, and they would still have a good chance of grabbing a top-two spot in the group.
Lewandowski missed the last international window with an ankle problem, and his finishing was definitely missed in a 1-1 draw against Moldova in Warsaw. He holds the Polish record with 81 international goals, and only two European players have scored more goals for their countries – Ferenc Puskas and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The veteran star has also registered 31 assists in 144 appearances for Poland, which further shows how important he is for the team. He can cause chaos in the opposing defenses with only his presence on the pitch, and Poland boss Michał Probierz will be delighted to have Lewandowski available for the key game.
One of Lewandowski’s first international appearances for Poland came in a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. Since then, the Poles have suffered four defeats in five head-to-head clashes, with Lewandowski yet to score in the match-up. Friday would be a perfect time for him to finally get his maiden goal against the Czechs.
