Marseille has enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, but the team heads into Sunday’s big match without a manager after fans pushed Marcelino out following last weekend’s dull 0-0 draw at home versus Toulouse. Overall, Marseille has drawn three of its five Ligue 1 matches this season, which shows the team has lacked cutting edge up front despite picking up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the summer.
Jacques Abardonado has temporarily taken charge of the team, and he at least got Marseille firing in his first outing as the new boss, as OM opened its Europa League campaign with a 3-3 draw in Amsterdam against Ajax. Aubameyang has two goals on the night and should now head into the weekend full of confidence. It would be quite a story if he opened his league account for Marseille in a game against PSG and helped the team to a rare derby victory.
Marseille beat PSG in a French Cup clash last season, but the Parisians have clearly dominated the clash for over 10 years. 22 of the last 28 meetings between the two sides have ended in Paris Saint-Germain victories. Marseille hadn’t beaten its most hated rival at home since 2011 before goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ruslan Malinovskyi secured a 2-1 triumph in last season’s cup meeting.
PSG responded to the rare defeat by going back to the Velodrome for a league match a couple of weeks later and winning 3-0 in a comfortable fashion. It was the Kylian Mbappe show, as the PSG superstar recorded two goals and an assist in the big win.
Mbappe has also kicked off the 2023-24 campaign in style, scoring seven goals in four league outings. But despite his red-hot form, the team has struggled to perform up to its usual levels. After going 3-2 down to Nice in the last round, PSG sits on just eight points through the first five games of the season, which is the club’s lowest mark in the QSI era.
