WTA US Open 2023 | Can Swiatek Defend Her Title?

WTA US Open 2023

And just like that, the final Grand Slam of the year is here on the WTA Tour. After a ferocious eight months of tennis, the best women in the world will have one last shot at winning a major crown in 2023, with the US Open playing out over the next fortnight in New York.

After a year of tearing through the WTA Tour with her ferocious ground strokes, Poland’s Iga Swiatek has spent the past eight months attempting to defend all of her titles from 2022. She’s done so successfully three times already this year, can she do it again here in New York? Aryna Sabalenka will be hoping not as will Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, among others.

Looking at the WTA US Open draw, it very much feels as though this tournament is on track for a Swiatek vs. Sabalenka re-match, this time in the final. The pair met in the semi-finals last year that Swiatek won, but Sabalenka got the better in their most recent encounter at the Madrid Masters in May.

For Swiatek to make the final, she’ll need to go through Gauff again, which will be a big challenge considering the American is riding a hot winning streak including a victory over the world No. 1. However, Swiatek is quick to learn from her mistakes and despite being beaten by Gauff recently still holds a 7-1 head-to-head over the 19-year-old.

Sabalenka has a challenge in the form of Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula in her draw. With the world No. 1 spot on the line and deep runs at all of this year’s Grand Slams, we say Sabalenka will get through these matches just fine. As a result, we recommend betting on Sabalenka to make the final as your conservative bet and Swiatek to win as the slightly riskier wager, given that the final feels like something of a coin flip.
