The PGA Tour takes us to the Mexican Pacific coastline this week for the Mexico Open at Vidanta, marking the final stop before its eastward voyage. Held at the Greg Norman-designed Vidanta for the third year running, the par 71 course stretches across a challenging 7,456 yards.
Reigning champion Tony Finau faces stiff competition, particularly from a pair of powerhouses boasting consistent top 10 finishes here: Cameron Champ and Patrick Rodgers. Brandon Wu, another force to be reckoned with, has secured top three placings in both his previous outings at the Mexico Open.
Jon Rahm is the most noticeable absentee in the Mexico Open field. The Spaniard triumphed in 2022 with a formidable -17 under par. He repeated his impressive showing last year, securing second place with a score of -21 under par, a mere three shots shy of Finau’s victory.
With Rahm leaving the PGA for LIV Golf, does this make Finau the odds-on favourite to replicate his 2023 success at Vindata? Read our 2024 Mexico Open betting preview, powered by bookmaker William Hill, to find out who stands the best chance to conquer the title in Mexico this weekend.

Tony Finau is the most favourable candidate to win this year’s Mexico Open. Vidanta has been a lucky course for Finau so far. He narrowly missed out on the title in his first attempt in 2022. Finau atoned for his runner-up finish a year later by beating Rahm to the crown. The reigning number one will set his sights on adding to his 40-under total score across eight rounds this week.
The odds place Nicolai Hojgaard closest to Finau. The Dane enters the competition in red-hot form, having notched up a win and two runner-up finishes in his last seven global outings since November. His latest podium finish was at the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Hojgaard will be hoping to hold onto this momentum and improve on his last year’s top 33 finish at Vidanta.
Rounding out the top three contenders is Emiliano Grillo, who brings an intriguing record to his third Mexico Open appearance. Last year, the Argentinian star notched a top five finish, and this year he is priced at 21.00 to claim the trophy and bring it back home to South America.
This year has been the year of underdogs in PGA Tour competitions. Last week, Hideki Matsuyama, priced at a staggering 91.00, defied the odds and conquered the Genesis Invitational with a blistering -9 under par 62 in the final round. It was the seventh successive time that a golfer won a tournament overcoming odds of 71 or more.
That said, we cannot overlook Finau’s incredible history at Vidanta. So, we are playing it safe and backing him for a successful title defence at 7.00.
