Can Germany Keep Ronaldo Quiet Once More?

The second round of fixtures in the “Group of Death” of the EURO 2020 will feature a meeting between Portugal and Germany. The Germans are pointless so far and badly need to get something on the board.

10Bet LogoCristiano Ronaldo started his tournament with a brace against Hungary, but he has never scored against Germany in four meetings. Bookmaker 10Bet has the odds at 2.30 for him to break the duck on Saturday.

Portugal struggled to break down Hungary, but they did get their way in the end and a 3-0 victory from the opening round sets them up nicely for success in a very tough group.

Ronaldo became the oldest ever player to score twice in a single game at the European Championships and he’s also now the all-time leading scorer in the competition with 11 goals. In addition, he’s the first player to play and score in five Euros and in eleven consecutive international tournaments.

Dropping Coca-Cola’s share price by 1.6 percent and causing a four billion dollar loss for the company with one single move is likely a record as well, but that’s a different story.

Ronaldo supposedly had a down year in 2020-21, but he still netted 36 times in 44 games for Juventus, and he’s also been on a roll for Portugal with seven goals in 12 appearances since September 2020. The 36-year-old scoring machine is now just four goals short of setting the new record for most goals in international football.

Germany started the tournament with a 1-0 loss, but it was always going to be tough with France their first opponent. The world champions took a 20th-minute lead via an own goal and never looked back shutting the shop and just coasting to three points.

Joachim Löw’s team ended up with 10 attempts, but Hugo Lloris needed to make only one save to maintain a clean sheet and getting more clear-cut chances is something the Germans must work on.

Die Mannschaft boasts plenty of quality in the squad, but Löw doesn’t have a reliable goal-scorer in his ranks. Thomas Müller has bagged 39 international goals and he’s got a very good World Cup record, but the Bayern star has never scored in the Euros while half of Timo Werner’s 16 international goals came in his first 14 outings in 2017-2018.

Germany will find it very difficult to beat Portugal if they can’t get their offense going although the head-to-head record is very favorable for them in the matchup with 10 wins and only three losses in 18 previous meetings.
