Coming off a T3 finish at the World Wide Technology Championship, Scottie Scheffler is heavily favoured at 6.50 to win. It’s hard to argue that this is unjustified. Scheffler was the best player in the world for over six months. He looked extremely solid when he teed it up just two weeks ago, and as we saw last spring when Scottie Scheffler gets hot, there is no one except for maybe a guy from Northern Ireland who can stop him.

However, at 6.50 to win, saying that Scheffler is a good value pick would be a lie. Though his last start resulted in a top three finish, Scheffler doesn’t quite seem to be his Masters winning self. He is on track to get back to that level but with a recent putter change and a general lack of external confidence as of late, it may be best to look elsewhere this week.

Tony Finau missed the cut at the World Wide Technology Championship, but if we pan out and look at his last six starts, he has two wins, a T5 and a solo ninth finish. He also performed well at the Presidents Cup.

Finau is one of the best drivers of the golf ball in the world and has excellent iron play to back that up. Historically, his putter has prevented him from being a prolific winner, but his back-to-back wins at the 3M Open and the Rocket Mortgage Classic proved that the man can now roll the rock.

At 19.00 to win, sitting behind Sam Burns and Aaron Wise, Tony Finau is perhaps the best value choice on the board this week.

This Weeks Long-shots

  • Sam Burns First Round Leader at 26.00
  • Scottie Scheffler Wire to Wire Winner at 36.00
  • Taylor Pendrith to Win at 41.00

Sam Burns is an elite putter and when you combine that with great approach play, what you get is the potential to make copious amounts of birdies. Burns is one of the best players in the world and if he gets hot on Thursday, he can surely be leading the tournament going into Friday.

If anyone can take the lead on Thursday and ride it all the way to Sunday afternoon, it’s Scottie Scheffler. We saw him run the Masters from Friday afternoon to Sunday and with a weaker field to contend against this week, it would not be all too surprising to see the World Number 2 run the tables.

Taylor Pendrith is the quintessential bomber. Being one of the longest off the tee in the world, you just have to wait for the putter and wedges to cooperate and you will have a chance.

Be sure to tune in to the Cadence Bank Houston Open to watch Scottie Scheffler take on Tony Finau at Memorial Park.
