A recent run of just two points across four outings seemingly saw Lens drop out of the title race but back-to-back defeats for PSG have given the side from Northern France another chance to try and produce a shock triumph this spring in Ligue 1.
Manager Franck Haise has built his side’s success on rock-solid defense and no other team has conceded as few times as Lens this season – through 29 outings, the Blood and Gold have allowed only 21 goals.
Haise has also put together an exciting attack with veteran Florian Sotoca and rising Belgium star Lois Openda doing most of the damage. Sotoca has produced six goals and eight assists, while Openda is among the league’s most prolific players with 15 goals scored. The 23-year-old has notched six of his goals during the team’s current three-game winning streak.
With Strasbourg also boasting a 15-goal man in their ranks in Habib Diallo, Lens can’t afford to let their levels drop and has to stay alert throughout the whole 90 minutes Friday.
Diallo is on a run of seven goals in seven games since February, giving the Strasbourg fans finally something to be excited about. The Le Racing faithful likely had very high hopes for the campaign after Strasbourg produced a top-six finish a season ago but the results have massively dipped in 2022-23.
After suffering only nine losses during the whole of last season, Strasbourg has already dropped 13 games and the team boasts just five victories, which is the third-lowest mark in the league. Diallo has a great scoring record, but he’s not received a lot of support from teammates and a tally of 37 goals in 29 games is a disappointing haul for a side that averaged close to 1.6 goals per game last season.
Strasbourg has also already conceded more goals (50) than they did across the entire previous season (43). New manager Frederic Antonetti has come in with some decent results, suffering only two losses in his first six games in charge, but sitting 16th, Strasbourg is still dangerously close to the relegation zone and will have a nervy spring in 2023 if they can’t string together a run of victories.
