Salzburg, who have qualified for the knockout stages in the Champions League for the first time, got very close to beating the German giants in the opening leg as they were leading for the majority of the game before Kingsley Coman made it 1-1 in the 90th minute.
The Austrian champions haven’t had a lot of success in Europe over the years, but they did make it to the Europa League semifinals in 2018 and have steadily improved with each season.
The core of the team is very young and exciting, and they should also be full of motivation for the huge clash. A lot of them are already linked with big European sides but it’s a chance for others to impress as well.
Salzburg’s biggest star Karim Adeyemi also has plenty to prove in the tie after spending some time at Bayern at a very young age before moving on.
The 20-year-old has been a force all season long recording 19 goals and four assists in 33 games across all competitions. He’s also impressed in the Champions League with three goals and two assists.
Bayern will look to dominate on home turf, but they have to remain focused on defense to avoid getting caught out by Adeyemi’s movement.
The six-time European champions have failed to get past the round of 16 stage just twice since 2006-07 and it would be a huge shock if they aren’t able to take care of business against Salzburg. Although looking at recent form, a negative result for Bayern wouldn’t actually be a big surprise.
Julian Nagelsmann has seen his side win just twice in the last four games and the run includes a 4-2 shock defeat against Bochum. Their defensive record has been poor and even Robert Lewandowski seems to be going through a slump.
The Polish goal machine has failed to score in back-to-back games and in three of his last four outings. His standards are so high that Lewandowski hasn’t scored in consecutive games for only the third time since the start of last season. He can turn it on at any moment but his current dry spell will definitely be encouraging for Salzburg.
